As part of the Institute’s goal to foster teamwork, altruism, respect and tolerance, students are encouraged to get involved in the various extracurricular activities offered by the Institute’s 7 student-run clubs. For more pictures of club activities, please head to the gallery section.
行願社 (community service & outreach)
As the oldest club in the college, the Xingyuan Club is dedicated to putting into practice the ideals of compassion and service established by the founder, Master Sheng Yen. Members actively embody the spirit of altruism, bringing warmth and care to various sectors of society through regularly held volunteer activities.
Its scope of service encompasses accompanying senior citizens in retirement homes, guiding youth activities, and participating in numerous campus and community public welfare projects. Through deep-rooted companionship and practical service, the Xingyuan Club strives to spread love and kindness across the campus and into every corner of society.
悅音社 (Joyful Melody Club) 簡稱為:JMC
“Delighting all hearts to convey the joy of the Dharma,
Resonating the Dharma Drum to purify the human world."
The club’s mission is to purify human minds through music and practice Buddhist service through sound, just as stated in the Māhaprajñāpāramitā Upadeśa (The Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom):
“Bodhisattvas seek sublime sounds to purify the Buddha-land. They wish for all sentient beings in the realm to hear these sublime sounds so that their hearts become gentle and pliant; being pliant, they are easily transformed. Therefore, through the cause and condition of sound, they make offerings to the Buddha.”
By infusing lively and lighthearted melodies with the pure stream of the Dharma, the club reinterprets traditional Buddhist music through innovative performance styles, thereby promoting modern Buddhist music to a wider audience.
休閒社(xiuxianclub)
The club’s purpose is to equip students with professional skills, providing them with an extra layer of security for their future career paths. By integrating these practical skills with the Dharma, it aims to fill daily life with peace and tranquility.
It is hoped that the courses will enrich participants’ lives with a broader array of knowledge and skills. As a recreational club, it effectively helps balance body and mind during learning and promotes emotional relaxation. For participating students, it boosts learning motivation while alleviating academic stress and low spirits, allowing them to unwind physically and mentally to achieve true emotional relief.
淨土社(PureLand)
Cultivating Fields of Blessing, Deepening Spiritual Practice
Through daily farming and cultivation, the club guides members to connect with the earth and nurture a deep appreciation and care for nature, providing a peaceful sanctuary to relieve stress and settle the mind.
From soil preparation and seedling care to sowing seeds of blessings and tidying up afterward, members strengthen their bonds through grounded, fulfilling labor, significantly boosting team cohesion. In a warm and harmonious atmosphere, everyone shares their farming insights and personal spiritual growth—deepening their practice while encouraging and inspiring one another to strive for continuous progress.
魄鼓社(drumming)
The Po Drum Club meets weekly for practice under the guidance of professional drummers, balancing musical skill development with physical conditioning, while regularly performing at various campus events.
Carrying forward the spiritual essence of the “Dharma Drum," the club integrates Chan practice into its drumming training. It aims to foster team cohesion while helping members achieve a harmonious balance of body and mind, blending dynamic movement with inner stillness. By transforming the resonant power and intense focus of drumming into a meditative experience, the club creates an artistic expression that embodies “Chan in Motion."
法鼓球社 (sports)
The Dharma Drum Sports Club is the only club in the college dedicated solely to ball sports. Offering facilities for a variety of sports—including table tennis, squash, basketball, tennis, and badminton—it is the ideal venue for students and faculty to relieve stress and stay fit after a busy day of study and training.
Badminton serves as the club’s core focus, with visiting professional coaches offering hands-on instruction every Wednesday. Whether you want to build a solid foundation from scratch or refine your advanced skills, you will find expert guidance here. Beyond breaking a sweat and sparring with fellow players, members can bond with like-minded friends and experience the vitality and mind-body balance that sports bring.
書畫社 (calligraphy & painting)
Guided weekly by professional instructors, the Calligraphy and Painting Club offers tailored courses designed for students of all skill levels. Beginners can learn the fundamentals of calligraphy and brush painting, while intermediate learners refine their techniques through step-by-step guidance and practice.
Since ancient times, calligraphy and painting have been inextricably linked to one’s inner nature, embodying spiritual values such as “practicing writing is cultivating the mind" and “an upright brush reflects an upright mind." Every stroke of brush and ink mirrors the depth of one’s spiritual practice.
The club’s classes are fully open to everyone. Beyond providing a peaceful space to nourish the soul and unwind outside of class, we hope students—while immersing themselves in the creation of calligraphy, painting, and Buddhist art—can experience the Buddhist wisdom of mind cultivation and self-refinement in the present moment.
